Reimagining Beat Discovery For Offtop

Overview

Offtop is a beat-sharing platform where musicians organize and share their music files with collaborators, creating a hub for producers to upload, store, and distribute their beats while connecting with artists searching for their next perfect sound.

The Challenge

As Offtop has grown, its basic filename-only search system has become a major limitation. Without the ability to filter beats by musical attributes like tempo, key, or mood, users must manually scroll through countless files to find matches for their creative vision, creating unnecessary friction in the discovery process.

Icon System

There was an issue with consistency with icon usage. To solve this problem I helped create a new system of 30 icons and also created guidelines on how they should be used. This helps maintain clarity and consistency throughout.

Creating a New Tag System

To improve beat discovery, we developed a streamlined tagging system with six key categories that capture the essential attributes of a beat: tempo, key, mood, genre, instruments, and style. While these tags are optional to maintain a frictionless upload experience, they allow producers to make their beats more discoverable while giving searching artists powerful new filters to find exactly what they're looking for.

Search Filters

To ensure an efficient search experience, we implemented a new filter system that lets users narrow their search using any combination of the six music tags. The search interface features a clean design with collapsible filter categories, allowing users to quickly scan and select relevant attributes while still maintaining the option to search by traditional methods like filename or uploader.

Results

  • Search time decreased significantly - artists now find relevant beats faster

  • Multiple rounds of user testing were essential for optimizing filter granularity

  • Adding flexibility in the upload flow (making tags optional) led to higher user satisfaction without sacrificing feature adoption
